This shrub varies in size and
shape, occurring in low mats or upright, sometimes forming thickets. It is a
deciduous tree. It grows 2 – 3 m (6.8 – 10 ft) in height. The branches are
often bright red in color, while the smaller twigs are yellowish, reddish, or
brownish, with a coating of hairs. The leaves are green in color, oval in shape
and have smooth or serrated margins. The shiny leaf blades are 1-5 cm long. The
inflorescence is a catkin. It blooms in late spring.
