| Cycas sancti-lasallei – Agoho Cycad Leaves |
The leaves of Cycas sancti-lasallei are bold, rigid, and form a symmetrical crown that contributes strongly to the plant’s majestic appearance. Mature fronds can reach lengths of 1.8 to 2.5 meters, arching slightly outward from the central trunk. Each leaf is pinnate, bearing numerous narrow, linear to lanceolate leaflets arranged evenly along a stout rachis. Young leaves emerge with a dense brown to golden tomentum, which protects them from desiccation and excessive solar radiation. As the leaves mature, this covering gradually sheds, revealing a deep green, glossy surface with a tough, leathery texture. Leaflet margins are slightly revolute, and the tips are sharply pointed, enhancing resistance to water loss and herbivory. The midrib is prominent, providing strength and structural integrity. Leaf production typically occurs once annually, reflecting the species’ slow and conservative growth habit.
Persistent leaf bases remain attached to the trunk for years, offering additional protection. These long-lasting, architecturally striking leaves play a major role in the ornamental appeal and ecological resilience of the Saint La Salle cycad.
